OS X Universal Access/Voice Over = Black Boxes Everywhere!

2007:06:13

OS-X is great but it can be quirky at times. Accidentally enabling the ‘Universal Access/Voice Over’ setting is one of those times and may leave you thinking you are stuck in a world where everything has an ugly black box.

Symptoms of Universal Access/Voice Over

  • Black boxes around icons, text inputs, etc.
  • Finder menu has ‘Log off’/'Shutdown’ listed twice

The first time I experienced these symptoms, I tried the standard fare of solutions – shutting down applications, removing newly-installed software and of course several reboots. To my bewilderment, my mac was still suffering from the aformentioned symptoms.

Solution

The real issue is “Universal Access/Voice Over”. You can ‘accidentally’ enable this by hitting ‘Command – F5′. The way to turn this off is to

  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Open Universal Access
  3. Turn off Voice Over

There! Your Mac should be back to normal.
